MALACHI MITCHELL-
THOMAS KILLED AT
NORTH WEST 200
Y
oung road racing prospect
Malachi Mitchell-Thomas
has passed away following an
accident in the second Super-
twins race at the North West
200 in Northern Ireland over the
weekend.
Malachi Mitchell-Thomas, 20,
the current Senior Manx Grand
Prix Champion on the Isle of
Man, passed away after an ac-
cident at Dhu Varren, Portrush.
He was tended by medical staff
but died at the scene.
Racing was abandoned for
the remainder of the event.
Hailing from Chorley in Lan-
cashire, UK, Malachi Mitchell-
Thomas was touted as one of
the hottest upcoming riders in
the Irish road rac-
ing scene, having
scored his Manx
Grand Prix win in
2015 and podium
finishes at the
Tandragee 100 and Cookstown
100. He was entered in the Su-
pertwins race for the Cookstown
BE Racing Team.
Mitchell Thomas' death
comes just weeks after fellow
Manx Grand Prix winner, Billy
Redmayne, whom Mitchell-
Thomas had shared the Isle of
Man podium with, also lost his
life in an accident at the Scar-
borough Spring Cup meeting.
The tragedy overshadowed
the 2016 North West, where
Alastair Seeley became the
most successful rider in the
event's history by claiming his
16th and 1th wins at the event,
with a double victory in the Su-
persport class. Michael Dunlop
won the only Superbike race
of the meeting, Ian Hutchinson
took the Superstock win and
Ivan Linton won both Supertwins
races. CN
Malachi Mitchell-Thomas was on
the cusp of stardom in the Irish
road-racing scene.
RYAN FARQUHAR INJURED AT NORTH WEST 200
I
reland's most successful road racer, Ryan Farquhar, suffered serious injuries when he collided with
Dan Cooper while contesting the lead in the first Supertwins race at the North West 200.
Farquhar suffered pelvic and chest injuries in the fall and was described as "seriously ill" by doctors
in the Royal Victoria Hospital in Belfast, where he was placed in intensive care.
However, by Monday, May 16, Farquhar had been
removed from intensive care and is expected to make a
full recovery, his current condition is being described as
"stable."
Cooper suffered shoulder injuries in the fall and has
since been released from the hospital.
Two other riders, Northern Ireland riders, Nico Mawhin-
ney and Paul Gartland, are in a stable condition in the same
hospital following separate accidents at the event. CN
Farquhar is lucky to have escaped the monster
crash at the North West 200.
