IN THE WIND P48 THE BLM AND TREAD LIGHTLY! LAUNCH RESPECT AND PROTECT CAMPAIGN L ast week, the Bureau of Land Manage- ment (BLM) and Tread Lightly! launched their newest collaboration called Respect and Protect, a public awareness campaign which aims to eliminate looting and vandal- ism of archaeological, paleontological, and natural resources on public lands in Utah. The campaign kicked off with an event at the Natural History Museum of Utah in Salt Lake City attended by over 70 members of the public. "When people remove ancient artifacts from the public lands, we all lose," said BLM Director Neil Kornze. "If each one of us acts as a steward of our nation's natural and cultural treasures, we can 'respect and protect' them for future generations." The Respect and Protect campaign will not only remind public land visitors that the looting of these priceless resources is against the law, but will also encourage visitors to volun- teer as active stewards in high-risk areas, engage in educational opportunities to learn more about Utah's rich cultural and natural heritage, and report any information about these illegal be- haviors to the proper authorities. These efforts will be completed through innovative marketing, education and outreach strategies in print, on- line, and social media platforms. The BLM and Tread Lightly! began developing the campaign in 2014 and worked with hundreds of stakeholders across Utah to create appropriate messages. "Through our collective efforts, Tread Lightly! and the Bureau of Land Management will em- power Utah's public to enjoy their cultural and natural heritage in a way that minimizes damage to these places," said Lori McCullough, Tread Lightly! Executive Director. The BLM and Tread Lightly! will also host five additional public events across Utah to intro- duce local communities to the Respect and Protect campaign, including events at the Utah Field House of Natural History State Park Muse- um in Vernal on June 11, the Dinosaur Discovery Site at Johnson Farm in St. George on July 16, the Moab Information Center in Moab on July 28, the Utah State University Eastern Prehis- toric Museum in Price on August 27, and at the BLM Calf Creek Falls Trailhead near Escalante on September 24. All events are free and open to the public. CN The BLM and Tread Lightly! Introduce the Respect and Protect campaign in Utah.
