50 Years Ago May 12, 1966
Four riders got together to break the time record riding a motorcycle from
Tijuana to La Paz, B.C. Mexico. Those four riders were Eddie Mulder, Dave
Ekins, Bud Ekins and Cliff Coleman. It took them 39 hours to make the
trip… We reported that Skip Van Leeuwen had his AMA professional license
suspended for competing in a sportsman event, which was a new rule that had
just been implemented… Sammy Tanner, Gene Romero and Earl Roeseler
were some of the names making the headlines in
the local scene in California.
40 Years Ago May 11, 1976
Featured on the cover 40 years ago was the Ossa 250 GP that we tested.
We said, "This is a serious piece of racing equipment and leaves no room
for sloppy thinking or slopping riding"… We covered Jimmy Weinert's win at
the 250 National Motocross in Forsyth, Georgia… In LeMans, France, Barry
Sheene won the 500cc Road Race GP… We covered Tom Kelly's victory
at the California City Grand Prix… We featured an extensive review on many
motocross products, mostly protective gear.
20 Years Ago May 8, 1996
In our road racing special issue we featured Ben Bostrom and Matt Wait on
the cover and asked the question: The future? We also featured interviews
with John Kocinski, Rich Oliver and Scott Zampach… Doug Chandler
won the AMA Superbike National at Laguna Seca… Jeremy McGrath's bid
for a perfect record came to an end at the Trans World dome in St. Louis,
where Jeff Emig became the first person after 14 races other than McGrath
to win an AMA Supercross in 1966.

The week earlier we reported that in Texas, Honda had broken the world
record for the highest average speed over six, 12 and 24 hours. They rode a
Honda VFR700F, and in 24 hours it maintained a speed average of 143.18 mph.
Twenty-nine riders were used. A view from the cockpit of the record-breaking
run was pictured on the cover… Bubba Shobert won the San Jose Mile… Rick
Johnson won the Mickey Thompson Off-Road
Gran Prix at the Rose Bowl in Pasadena… Dave
Bertram won the Little Polecat National Enduro.
