WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP

R
ed Bull KTM's Ryan
Dungey set a record in
New Jersey, and no-
body has mentioned it yet:
In clinching the 2016 AMA
450cc Supercross Cham-
pionship, Dungey has now
won a total of seven AMA Na-
tional Championships, and
eight professional champion-
ships in total (counting the
2009 AMA 250cc Western
Regional SX title), but the
2016 title marks the first time
in all of those championships
that Dungey has successfully
defended a championship.
"In my whole career, I've
been able to win titles, but the
repetitive, back-to-back chal-
lenge was the tough part,"
Dungey said after successful-
ly defending the first champi-
onship in his entire career.
This, indeed, is a record,
believe it or not, and that
same night in New Jersey,
while Roczen ran away with
another win, Dungey ended
the extension of podium
finishes, another record he
already owns.
In the 250SX East Cham-
pionship, Malcolm Stewart
put himself in a very good
position to win the title,
which would be the first AMA
Supercross title of his career,
by dominating the 250SX
East Main in New Jersey.
FIRST TIME IN HIS CAREER
A fourth-place finish was more
than enough for Ryan Dungey to
wrap up the 2016 Monster Energy
AMA Supercross Championship.
