III FRIENDLY FIRE

ike most of you reading
this, before I started rac-
ing, even before I got my
first bike, I read dirt bike maga-
zines and I had some heroes.
Roger DeCoster, Ake Jonsson
and Brad Lackey were my moto-
cross guys, Gene Romero, Mark
Brelsford and Kenny Roberts
in Class C, and in the desert, I
was all about J.N. Roberts and
Malcolm Smith. When I started
racing, though, I raced only MX
and GPs. Although I never raced
desert, I was good friends with
Jim Fishback, Larry Roeseler
and Chuck Miller. Miller's Baja
partner, Bruce Ogilvie, had
been my neighbor growing up in
Riverside, California. I remember
thinking it was weird that des-
ert racers belonged to clubs,
with names like "Checkers MC"
and "Prospectors MC." It made
no sense to me, because us
motocrossers didn't need no
stinkin' club, it was every man for
himself.
I loved it when "LR," Jim,
Chuck and Bruce would show
up on occasion at a Corona
GP (a popular local GP that
ran about four times a year),
because I had the place totally
wired and they were just out
there to hone their MX skills and
maybe test some motorcycle
parts. They didn't care about
winning, they were just getting
