One of our features stories 50 years ago was our coverage of the National
Championship Hare Scrambles hosted by the Simi Valley M.C. near California
City, California. Dick Vick took the overall win and Earl Roeseler won the
Trail Bike class… Nearly 700 riders participated in the 6
th
Annual 29 Palms
Spring Tour that benefited the City of Hope foundation… Dan Haaby topped
the Trophy Dash and the A Main event at the indoor short track inside the
Long Beach Arena… Ralph White topped
Sammy Tanner to win the Expert main at the
Ascot Half Mile.
40 Years Ago May 4, 1976
Tony DiStefano was pictured on the cover 40 years ago for sweeping both
motos at the 250cc National MX at Rio Bravo Motocross Park in Houston,
Texas. Marty Smith took second and Wyman Priddy topped the 500cc
Support class… Rolf Tibblin and Jack Johnson teamed up to win the Mint
400… Chris Carter covered the John Player Transatlantic Trophy Match
Race at Mallory Park in Tarporley, Cheshire, England. Americans did well but
the Brits took the win.
20 Years Ago May 1, 1996
Miguel DuHamel came away with the victory at the second round of the AMA
Superbike National Championship Series at the Pomona Fairplex in California.
Chis Carr earlier had put a Harley-Davidson motorcycle on the pole for the first
time in Superbike racing… Scott Parker raced to victory at the Pomona Half
Mile… For the first time, supercross visited Charlotte Motor Speedway where
Jeremy McGrath increased his win streak to 13… Norfumi Abe won a thrilling
eight-rider battle to the finish line at the Suzuka Grand Prix.

30 Years Ago May 7, 1986
Chris Carr was featured on the cover to accompany our close-up look at the
Wood-Rotax dirt tracker… We reported Honda's attempt to break the 24-hour
Motorcycle World Speed Record at the Uniroyal test track in Loredo, Texas.
They were successful, riding a VFR750F 3436.3 miles at an average speed of
143.18 mph; the old record was set at 128.23 mph by Cycle World magazine
with a GSX-R750… Bubba Shobert became
the third rider ever to complete the grand slam in
GNC racing when he won the Phoenix Half Mile.
