SHIREY'S TURN AT SAND HOLLOW WORCS Z ip Ty Racing's Dalton Shirey learned from the best and raced liked a seasoned pro while claiming his first Pro-class win at round five of the Rocky Mountain ATV/MC World Off- Road Championship Series, presented by Maxxis and Dirt Bike, at Sand Hollow OHV Area in Hurricane, Utah, April 16-17. KTM's Gary Sutherlin worked his way onto the second spot on the podium, while Maxxis/Preci- sion Concepts Racing's Robby Bell claimed third. The sand was flying in the wind all weekend at Sand Hol- low, which made for a very tech- nical track with square edges and peaked dunes, and the sand was constantly changing, which kept the racers on edge over the nine-mile race course. Shirey was able to rail the outside of the first turn and edge out Sutherlin for the holeshot but dropped back behind Sutherlin early in the first lap. That was necessarily a bad thing, as it allowed him to learn some good lines from the 2014 WORCS champ. Sutherlin even- tually bobbled going through the scoring chute at the end of the lap, giving Shirey the space he needed to take the lead and eventual victory, his first ever in WORCS competition. The win moves him to second in the title chase, just 21 points behind Bell. "Sand and rocks are really my specialty, so putting those two together in one weekend was a good combination," said Shirey. "I followed Robby and Gary in practice and learned some really smooth lines. I will keep build- ing off of this. Our setup was perfect for here."
