50 Years Ago April 21, 1966
We saw Sammy Tanner's win streak come to an end at the Ascot Half Mile.
Mert Lawwill dove to the inside of Tanner, took the lead and held him off for
the victory, ending Tanner's run of seven straight wins at the venue in Gardena,
California… Road racing at Carlsbad Raceway was as hot as ever, and Dick
Hammer made headlines for winning the 250cc class. En route, Hammer
shattered the lap record… Speed wobbles were causing big concerns in
drag racing at Irwindale. Two recent crashes
prompted people to ask, why? Could it be the
track?
40 Years Ago April 20, 1976
Kenny Roberts was pictured on the cover of Cycle News 40 years ago
after winning the Camel Pro Series Dallas Short Track… Fastrack Raceway
in Phoenix, Arizona, hosted a round of the AMA 250cc National MX
Championship and Jimmy Weinert came away with the victory, but everyone
was talking about that new kid, Tony DiStefano… We explored the makings
of Rokon motorcycles… We also took a look at some of the exotic 125cc
machinery of the 125cc National MX Series.

David Bailey was the big winner at the Pontiac Supercross doubleheader in
Michigan. The factory Honda rider won both nights… Scott Parker came to the
Sacramento Mile and edged out Bubba Shobert for the victory… We covered
Team Lockhart's victory at the St. Louis AMA MotoWorld U.S. Endurance
Series… We took the Honda VFR750F, Suzuki GSX-R750 and Yamaha
FZ750 to the drag strip to see which one was
the quickest. It was the Suzuki.

We covered Mick Doohan's victory at the Indonesian Grand Prix, but Alex
Barros took over the points lead… In the Nevada desert, Ty Davis and Paul
Krause teamed up to win the Vegas-to-Reno… Jeremy McGrath extended
his supercross win streak to 11 in Tampa… We looked at the bikes of the
Four-Stroke Motocross Nationals… Ty Davis had a busy week; he also
won the Lone Star National Enduro in Texas… Jeff Matiasevich won the All-
Japan MX… We tested the Triumph Adventurer.
