SMITH TOPS ASSEN WORLD SUPERSPORT
I
t was a good day for World
Supersport racing, but really it
was two days in one.
The first race, which ended
up not being a race at all, was
run in the dry until spits of rain,
and then water-cannons of rain,
fell from the leaden Dutch skies.
On the wet restart, much
delayed, PJ Jacobsen got into
the lead only to fall again (after
a crash when the rains first
showed up in the first "race").
"I'm really sorry for how the
race went in the end, because
the team did an amazing job in
getting the bike fixed in such a
short time to allow me to line up
for the restart," said Jacobsen.
"It really wasn't my day, even
though I was able to race at the
front both in dry and wet con-
ditions. I can't thank my crew
enough and I hope the next
round will bring us better luck."
In a six lap second race, with
full points awarded, the final
three had become so after both
Kawasaki Puccetti runners, So-
fuoglu and points leader Randy
Krummenacher had got too
intimate into the chicane and
Krummenacher went wide, los-
ing touch with the leaders. His
11 points keep him in the cham-
pionship lead all the same.
Despite a serious but curi-
ous lack of rear grip, Sofuo-
glu looked good for a win until
British riders Kyle Smith (CIA
Landlord Insurance Honda) and
Gino Rea (GRT Racing Team
MV Agusta) came through after
Sofuoglu locked the front and
ran wide for third.
Smith needed no second
invite and scored his second
career win, which was the first
