50 Years Ago April 14, 1962
One of our feature stories 50 years ago was the Hilltoppers MC's second time
hosting an AMA National Hare & Hound event in Lucerne Valley, California. Gary
Conrad pulled off a late-race pass on Bob Ferro end ended up taking the win
after a somewhat controversial finish. We made note of seventh-place overall
finisher who was a novice—JN Roberts… A growing staff necessitated Cycle
News to move to a new building in Long Beach, California, which it planned to
do 50 years ago this week… Sammy Tanner con-
tinued to dominate half-mile racing at Ascot Park.
40 Years Ago April 13, 1976
Dick "Bugsy" Mann was featured on the cover of Cycle News 40 years ago
to accompany our interview with the legendary motorcycle racer. Also on the
cover was young gun motocrosser David Taylor… The opening round of the
125/250cc National Motocross Series got underway in Plymouth, California.
The Hangtown National saw Bob Hannah win the 125cc class with a 1-1 sweep
and Jimmy Ellis top the 250cc class with a 1-2. Jimmy Weinert won the
second 250cc moto. In amateur racing, a young Broc Glover topped the 125cc
Expert class.
20 Years Ago April 10, 1996
The 500cc World Champion Road Racing Series got underway in Malaysia,
where Luca Cadalora (500cc) and Max Biaggi (250cc) came away with the
big wins… Jeremy McGrath extended his supercross win streak to 10 in India-
napolis. Mickael Pichon won the 125cc main… Fritz Kling won both legs of the
Formula USA round at a rainy Road Atlanta… We previewed the upcoming World
Superbike Championship. We predicted John Kocinski would be champ.

30 Years Ago April 16, 1986
We featured a project bike—a Honda CR125R-turned-ISDE racer—on the
cover 30 years ago. Also on the cover was the Hangtown National Motocross
opener from Prairie City (Sacramento), California. Erik Kehoe outdueled Micky
Dymond to win the 125cc class, and Rick Johnson won both 250cc mo-
tos… We covered the SCORE Great Mojave 250. The seemingly unbeatable
Husqvarna duo of Dan Ashcraft and Dan Smith
took the win… Chris Carr won the AMA Regional
Gardena Gold Cup Half Mile at Ascot.
