P116 50 Years Ago March 31, 1966 With April Fool's Day just around the corner, we had some fun with it, which might explain the doctored photo of an elongated drag bike (and rider) on the cover 50 years ago, though we did recognize some authentic drag-race overachievers in the issue… The Lost Angels M.C. hosted a hare scrambles in the California desert and everyone did, in fact, get lost. We said that riders were coming into the finish all over the place, except straight down from the sky… Triumph ran an ad with a picture of the Mona Lisa, saying "you'd smile too if you had a new Triumph." 40 Years Ago March 30, 1976 Our cover story was the two-day ISDT Qualifier from Ft. Hood, Texas, that was won by Dick Burleson… We covered round three of the Supercross series in Dallas, Texas, where Jimmy Ellis came away with the win in the four-race format… It was a Honda sweep at the Red Garter National Enduro held in Ballinger Canyon, California. Jay Tullis took the win over Rick Munyon and Mike Adams… CN Editor Jody Weisel wrote an article entitled "Freelancing Is A Dirty Word." He spoke of the difficulties of making a living being a moto freelancer. 20 Years Ago March 27, 1996 It was the closest finish ever of the Daytona 200, and we showed you just how close it was on the cover 20 years ago. Miguel Duhamel edged out Scott Russell for the win by .010 seconds. The race ran a week late when rain postponed the original event… In Houston, Jeremy McGrath chalked up his eighth win of the AMA Supercross Series. Kevin Windham won the 125cc main… Alan Cathcart tested the Bimota YB9SRI 600 "Junior Superbike." Before we hit the road, Cycle News Editor John Ulrich took a tour of the factory. The bike was featured on the cover… We were on hand to witness Terry Cunningham's win at the Cherokee National Enduro in Georgia… We also cover Jacky Vimond's victory at the Dutch MX GP… Dan Smith won again in the California desert.
