The Daytona 200 was featured in Cycle News 50 years ago. In a 93-rider field,
Buddy Elmore recorded what we called a "mild" upset in the race that took
place in front of 15,000 race fans. The 30-year-old electrician from El Paso,
Texas, rode a Triumph to victory and took home $3250 of the $12,500 purse.
George Roeder and Gary Hall joined Elmore on the podium. Yamaha-mounted
Robert Winters took the 100-mile 250cc-class championship and Walt Fulton
Jr. won the 76-mile Junior Championship.

The second round of the five-race AMA Supercross Series took place at the
Astrodome in Houston, Texas. It was a two-night event, Friday and Saturday,
with two motos each night adding up to a combined overall finish. Jimmy
Weinert (7-1-1-2) claimed the overall win over Kent Howerton and Tony
DiStefano… We covered the V.O.T.E. Trial in Texas Canyon, California, where
Marland Whaley took the win… Some of the names making the headlines in
the local scene were Broc Glover, Mitch Mayes and Donnie Cantaloupi.

Jeremy McGrath was pictured on the cover 20 years ago for winning the
Daytona Supercross over Damon Huffman and Damon Bradshaw. The
Daytona 200 was a washout. Heavy rain that just wouldn't go away forced
the postponement of the race to the following weekend. Other Daytona
happening: Will Davis won the Daytona Short Track, Steve Moorhead won
the 600 National, Rich Oliver won the 250 Grand Prix, Aaron Yates topped
the 750cc Supersport, Scott Summers won the GNCC at Ocala, and Steve
Hatch won the Alligator Enduro.
