50 Years Ago March 17, 1966
Malcolm Smith was featured on the cover of Cycle News 50 years ago. He
was caught in action blazing across the desert in Phelen, California. He took top
honors at the Don Watkins European Money Scrambles. Another notable winner
was Don Oglivie who topped the Open Amateur class… We also covered the
March Of Dimes Shamrocks Enduro won by Norton-mounted Tom Maxwell…
We featured a preview of the upcoming events at Daytona… Cycle News hosted
another Wednesday Night At The Movies in
Santa Monica.
40 Years Ago March 16, 1976
Daytona was the big happening in this issue 40 years ago. The Daytona 200
winner was Venezuelan Johnny Cecotto. Kenny Roberts was in contention
but a worn rear tire forced him to pit late in the race and he ended up ninth.
Roberts didn't go away empty handed, however, he won the Lightweight race.
Steve McLaughlin won what was a photo finish in the Superbike Production
class. Tony DiStefano won the Daytona Supercross in the three-moto
format race. Freddie Spencer won the 125 GP class in the Amateur National
Championships at Daytona.
20 Years Ago March 13, 1996
Jeremy McGrath was featured on the cover for winning the opening round
of the AMA National MX Series at Gainesville, Florida. Steve Lamson was
the 125-class winner. McGrath shared the cover with Daytona Formula USA
opening-round winner Doug Chandler… We tested the 1996 Yamaha
YZF1000R Thunderace, as well as the Triumph Trophy 900… Doug
Blackwell won the Wings & Wheels National Hare Scrambles in Georgia…
Yves Demaria won the MXGP warm-up race, the Beaucaire Classic, in
France, over Werner Dewitt and Tallon Vohland.

30 Years Ago March 19, 1986
Everything Daytona was featured in Cycle News 30 years ago. Eddie Lawson
was featured on the cover for winning the Daytona 200 over Kevin Schwantz
and Fred Merkel. Rick Johnson grabbed the Daytona Supercross victory
over David Bailey and Broc Glover; Keith Turpin won the 125 Pro-Am. Keith
Fox, Jeff Stanton and Mario Pacquette were the big winners in the Daytona
Amateur Supercross… Mike Baker edged out
Dan Smith at the Viewfinders Grand Prix at
Riverside International Raceway.
