III FRIENDLY FIRE

A
s much as I really hate
writing this, it looks like
2016 is going to be
another Ryan Dungey highlight
reel. We are six races into a
17-race supercross season
and he already has the magical
25-point lead that historically
spells doom for everyone else.
I think we all agree that Dungey
was the dominant rider in 2015,
but it was not until round eight
that he led by 25 points and he
just kept it rolling from there.
That is what Dungey does; he
becomes a force that just keeps
rolling, gaining momentum. I see
no reason to think that this year
will prove to be different. The
only chance for a non-Wheaties
athlete to win this championship
is for someone else to go on
a tear, or for Dungey to suffer
some bad luck. Since we would
not wish ill will on Dungey, or any
other rider, let's consider who
might be up to the task.
When Ken Roczen came out
with both barrels blazing last
year, there was plenty of talk
about him dominating the sea-
son, but that ended right about
the time we learned that he was
no longer working with Aldon
Baker—and for good reason.
Roczen's results pretty much
tanked after that and his bailing
out of Baker's program was a
sure sign of weakness, espe-
cially after all the whining he had
done about it on social media.
Ken certainly has the speed to
win on any given night, but he
has been inconsistent so far with
his starts. I figure Ricky Carmi-
CAN ANYONE CATCH HIM?
