50 Years Ago February 10, 1966
Our front-page news was highlighted by the AMA/D-37's decision to separate
desert and enduro championship points… We covered the Dirt Diggers M.C.'s
desert race in Adelanto, where the California high desert got a rare dusting of
snow… "Oval" racing came to the Long Beach Arena in California, where Eddie
Mulder beat the other 61 competitors on the 1/6
th
-mile concrete racecourse… In
our listing of the top desert racers in California, we pointed out that star racecar
driver Dan Gurney had earned number 257 in his
first year of racing in the desert. We promised an
interview with him in an upcoming issue.
40 Years Ago February 10, 1976
Hillclimbing (or more accurately Hillclimb crashing) made the front page
of Cycle News 40 years ago. They were all trying to get to the top of the
Matterhorn at Saddleback Park… Inside, we showed the latest 125cc MK9
Pursang motocrosser from Bultaco, and the latest 348 Cota trials bike from
Montesa… We tested the hot-new Maico AW 440 motocross bike. The
beautiful coffin-tanked machine from Germany sold for $1,858… We showed
you the best way to make your Suzuki RM370 Trans-AMA race-ready.

More than 65,000 fans filled Anaheim Stadium and saw Jeremy McGrath,
who was in the process of grabbing the holeshot in our cover photo, run off
with his third win of the three-race-old series. Damon Huffman and Steve
Lamson made up the podium. Kevin Windham won the 125cc main… Ty
Davis won the Oasis Mesquite Grand Prix in Nevada… Alan Cathcart took a
spin on Colin Edwards' World Superbike Yamaha YZF750.

30 Years Ago February 12, 1986
Steve Eklund was pictured on the cover 30 years ago for winning the AMA
Grand National Championship/Camel Pro Series opener at the Houston TT.
Scott Pearson took second and Chris Carr third. On the following night, round
two of the AMA/Nippondenso Supercross Series was held at the very same
venue (the Astrodome), where Jeff Ward came
out on top ahead of David Bailey and Rick
Johnson… We covered the Parker 400 where
legendary Husky teammates Dan Smith and
Dan Ashcraft combined efforts to take the win.
