50 Years Ago February 3, 1966
Fifty years ago, we had the local racing scene covered in the west, but one of
our lead stories was an update from the CBM, the Committee for Better Motor-
cycling, a small group of riders who dedicated themselves toward improving the
relationship between the motorcycling community and the general public… We
covered the ground-breaking ceremonies for U.S. Suzuki's new $1,250,000
national headquarters in Santa Fe, California… Husqvarna distributor Edison
Dye let Cycle News "try out" a Husqvarna 250 that was ridden to victory at a
local I.V. M.C. Hare Scrambles. Dye said this bike was a forerunner of a deter-
mined assault on the American sporting market by
the Swedish factory.
40 Years Ago February 3, 1976
"Crazy" Dave Aldana was featured on the cover with the big Superman "S"
on his chest from the "Astro" TT and Short Track in Houston. Aldana didn't
get the win. That, instead, went to double victor Rick Hocking… Gary
Ogden, Gaylon Mosier, A.C. Bakken, Bob Balentine, Danny "Magoo"
Chandler, Bobby Pickard and Wyman Priddy were some of the names
that made the headlines in our Local section… We showed you what were
the first published pictures of Suzuki's all-new
RM125 MXer in prototype form. The "up-pipe" RM
would go into production three months later.
20 Years Ago January 31, 1996
We featured a historical perspective of the modern sport bike, and to il-
lustrate this, we pictured and the Kawasaki GPz550 and the latest Suzuki
GSX-R750 on the front page… We reported the passing of two-time World
MX Champion Donny Schmit, who was just 29 years old. He had been just
days earlier diagnosed with a rare blood disease… Jeremy McGrath won
the Minneapolis Supercross; Kevin Windham topped the 125cc class…
Honda introduced its new Valkyrie.

Broc Glover was pictured on the cover of Cycle News 30 years ago to accom-
pany our interview with the "Golden Boy"… Rick Johnson was warming up for
the new year in the CMC Golden State Nationals and his latest victory came at
his home track at Carlsbad Raceway… Kees van
der Ven, Billy Liles and Guy Cooper were doing
the same in Gainesville, Florida… We interviewed
Camel Pro Series Rookie of the Year Chris Carr.
