AMERICANS STEAL THE SHOW AT
TRANSBORGARO
A
t the urging of motocross
legend Brad Lackey,
the who's who of American
motocross veterans recently
traveled across the pond to
compete in the Transbor-
garo Vet Motocross event in
Borgaro Torinese, Italy. With
the largest American contin-
gent yet in the 37 years of
the Italian classic, U.S. riders
dominated the podiums in
the three major classes: Broc
Glover bested the 70's class,
Jeff "Chicken" Matiasevich
went 1-1 for the 80's class
victory, while Robbie Reynard
topped the 90's class ahead
of Jeff Stanton.
U.S. participation has
grown substantially in the last
four years through the ambassa-
dorship of Lackey, who contin-
ues to draw his racing buddies
to the event. Although "Bad"
Brad doesn't race it himself, he
remains a regular at the annual
race.
"I've been involved the last
four years and we've had some
good success," said Lackey.
"I think this year was the big-
gest. We had Robbie [Reynard],
Danny [LaPorte], Broc [Glover],
Chuck [Sun], [Jeff] Stanton and
[Jeff] Matiasevich."
There are a number of Eu-
ropean stars, as well, such as
Pierre Karsmakers and MXGP
star David Philippaerts. The
event also saw MotoGP racer
Andrea Dovizioso flexing some
moto skills. Dovizioso lined up
to compete in the Family Cup
with his father, Antonio.
Glover, in a rare race appear-
ance, proved he still has plenty
of speed. The "Golden Boy"
successfully defended his num-
ber-one plate in the 70's class,
besting LaPorte and Sun. In the
end, LaPorte claimed second
while Sun narrowly missed the
podium in fourth. In the 90's
class, Stanton was looking to
defend his title, but saw it fall to
his rival Reynard. Stanton went
on to finish third in the class.
The event remains a rather
informal affair with a very casual
atmosphere and "loosely based"
divisions. There are no entry
fees, no purses and no admis-
sion fees—just bragging rights
on the line and plenty of fun to
be had on the natural terrain
motocross track. This year's
Transborgaro drew nearly 200
racers and several thousand
spectators eager to witness old
school motocross at its best. CN
American riders highlighted the
Italian Transborgaro motocross
event, which saw a number of
international race legends.
