Can-Am's Jimmy Ellis was pictured on the cover 40 years ago to accompany
our report of the Trans-AMA MX Series at Lake Whitney, Texas. Ellis won the
support class, but it was Tony DiStefano getting the big win in the 500cc
class… Up north in Puyallup, Washington, Gerrit Wolsink and Gary Semics
split moto wins in the 500cc class, but Roger DeCoster came away with the
overall win. Husky's Mickey Kessler won
the support class… We took a closer look at
Fox's revolutionary Fox Air Shox, which sold
for $219.50 a pair.
30 Years Ago November 27, 1985
We dissected the Suzuki GSX-R1000 for our feature story 30 years ago. A
cutaway drawing of the bike was shown on the cover… Cycle Tech was the
top team at the Wiseco/WERA National Championship Endurance Road Race
Series round at Road Atlanta… The AMA honored the top National Motocrosser
racers—Broc Glover, Ron Lechien and Jeff Ward—at a banquet in Anaheim,
California… We reported that Australian Wayne Gardner had signed with Roth-
mans Honda to compete in the 1986 World
Championship Road Race Series alongside
teammate Freddie Spencer.

We were the first to throw a leg over the new Ducati Monster S2R 1000…
One of our feature stories was a preview of the upcoming AMA Supercross
Series and the big question was: Two-stroke or four-stroke? Meaning, who
was going to ride what in what was truly a transitional year for the sport… We
interviewed Mike LaRocco… Josh Woods won the opening round of the in-
augural BooKoo Arenacross Series in Texas… Jason Crump and The World
topped Team USA in the USA versus The World Speedway Championship in
Auburn, California.

Hare Scrambles title came down to the final race in Washington, with Sum-
mers edging out Scott Plessinger for his fourth HS Championship. Plessing-
