INTERVIEW KURT CASELLI FOUNDATION RIDER SAFETY ADVISOR AND DAKAR RALLY AMBASSADOR P86 PIONEERING SAFETY TECHNOLOGY Along with being on the ground during races, the Kurt Caselli Foundation is venturing into the challenging world of research and development in safety technology—namely the field of mild traumat- ic brain injury. Through the backing of KTM and FMF, the Foundation entered a team in the 2015 24 Hours of Glen Helen with the primary goal of conducting a research study on head acceleration. "A head acceleration can be any- thing from a crash to a jar [like from a bump or a G-out]," Cody said. "We're gathering head acceleration data, developing a baseline on what a rider goes through in normal riding condi- tions during an endurance event. tWe were also trying to put together the exposure to head accelerations that a rider goes through as they fatigue. Not just a concussion but the minor impacts that you get under normal con- ditions like possibly G-ing out in a ditch, or just jarring and rattling and if that has any effect on their cognitive function." The project was the first of its kind in off-road motorcycling and enlisted the help of a company called Brain Century.
