VETS HEAT
UP GLEN
HELEN
N
ow in its 31
st
year, the
Dubya World Vet Moto-
cross Championship continues
to draw racers to Glen Helen
Raceway from around the
world, eager to compete in a
world-class event with classes
for nearly every age group. The
only requirement, you must
be at least 25 years of age to
enter.
Starring in the last two de-
cades has been Doug Dubach,
who has amassed 25 cham-
pionships in the event, and
despite getting into his 50s,
has continued to dominate the
prestigious 40+ Pro class. But
a fresh member of the 50+ divi-
sion was determined to change
all that in 2015. Former World
MX GP star Kurt Nicoll turned
his focus back to the track in an
effort to "finally" make a seri-
ous effort in the World Vet MX.
Nicoll proved he had done is
homework when it came time
for Saturday's 40+ Pro feature.
Nicoll and Dubach immediately
headed the field in the 20-min-
ute-plus-two-lap moto, leaving
the 40-somethings in the dust
as they battled for supremacy.
While Dubach got the advan-
tage in the opening moto with
Nicoll only one second off at the
finish, it all came down to the
second race.
Nicoll again got the hole-
shot, but this time, Dubach got
pinched off after trying to dive to
the inside, and while Nicoll was
off and running, "Dr. D" found
himself buried in the pack.
After overtaking Gordon Ward
for the lead, Nicoll headed to
the finish line while Dubach
charged hard to make his way
into second.
Nicoll set out to also claim the
50+ Expert win on Sunday. With
Dubach now threatened with the
notion of going home without
a win, the intensity reached a
fever pitch.
The two engaged in an epic
battle for the lead in the first
moto of the 50+ Expert class,
swapping the lead back and
forth with lap times that rivaled
those of the top 30+ Pro rac-
ers. Dubach got the edge in
the opening race with Nicoll on
his heels, leaving it all on the
second moto.
"I mean, talk about two guys
that are pretty evenly matched,"
Dubach said. "We were having
a great time. There's nothing
more fun than fiercely battling
with somebody, and being able
to race that hard and that close
and shake hands at the end."
Dubach's words proved to be
a bit premature. The finish of
the second moto came down
to the wire, and Dubach pulled
a "last-minute decision" in the
S-turn section before the finish
