PIONEERING SAFETY TECHNOLOGY
Along with being on the ground during races,
the Kurt Caselli Foundation is venturing into the
challenging world of research and development in
safety technology—namely the field of mild traumat-
ic brain injury. Through the backing of KTM and
FMF, the Foundation entered a team in the 2015
24 Hours of Glen Helen with the primary goal of
conducting a research study on head acceleration.
"A head acceleration can be any-
thing from a crash to a jar [like from a
bump or a G-out]," Cody said. "We're
gathering head acceleration data,
developing a baseline on what a rider
goes through in normal riding condi-
tions during an endurance event. tWe
were also trying to put together the
exposure to head accelerations that
a rider goes through as they fatigue.
Not just a concussion but the minor
impacts that you get under normal con-
ditions like possibly G-ing out in a ditch,
or just jarring and rattling and if that has any effect
on their cognitive function."
The project was the first of its kind in off-road
motorcycling and enlisted the help of a company
called Brain Century. For more on the KCF study
