40 Years Ago November 11, 1975
We touted a motorcycle victory over the four-wheelers on the cover of Cycle
News 40 years ago. Carl Cranke, who won the 125cc class with teammate
Eric Jensen, was pictured on the cover. Gene Cannady and Al Baker
teamed up to take the win on a 410cc Honda... The Hopetown Grand Prix in
Corriganville, California, got a big splash in Cycle News… The Los Angeles
Coliseum hosted the U.S. National Speedway Championships. Mike Bast
cleaned up… The BLM and the California
desert was still very much a hot topic.
30 Years Ago November 20, 1985
The 1986 CR125R was pictured on the cover 30 years ago to accompany
our test of the new Honda motocrosser… The Los Angeles Coliseum was
the site for the Rodil Trophy Supercross Championship Finals, the last
round of the three-race series that pitted Americans against "everyone
else." Jeff Ward sandbagged his heat race so he could get a better starting
position in the main; he won after holding
off Johnny O'Mara. Jim Holley took the
title… We showed you the latest models from
Cagiva and Can-Am.

Our feature story 10 years ago was our 2006 250F Motocross Shootout.
And the winner? The Honda CRF250R… Nathan Woods wrapped up
the WORCS Championship at the final round in Decatur, Texas… Chad
Johnson opened the 2005-2006 Arenacross Series with a win in Albany,
New York… Justin Williamson conquered the Moose Run in Fenton,
Illinios, which was the final round of the OMA Series… Jess Kempkes
won the Gas Gas USA Pro Invitational Trials in Langley, Oklahoma… Marco
Melandri edged out Nicky Hayden at the Valencia Grand Prix.

Dual sporting was the theme for issue 44 20 years ago. We featured a test
of the new Suzuki DR650S and Honda XR650L, compared the Honda to
the KTM 620R/XC, took you on a dual sport ride in Moab, and hopped-up a
Suzuki DR250S… We showed you the hottest bikes from the Tokyo Motor
Show… Scott Plessinger won the final GNCC race of the year and with it the
title. He and Scott Summers tied on points but
Plessinger had one more win. Summers was
leading the race before hitting a course worker.
