As pole starter Pedrosa led from start to finish, and as Lorenzo bullied his way into an early second—passing Rossi and Marquez on consecutive laps— and took off in fruitless pursuit, Marquez and Rossi were already fiercely engaged, and the Honda rider's delaying tactics looked quite deliberate. At one point after yet another re-overtake of the Honda, Rossi looked round and waved angrily: "Stop mess- ing me about." What looked even more deliberate was his attack on the seventh of 20 laps.
