We celebrated the Halloween holiday with a Halloween-themed cover 40
years ago… A pair of Suzuki riders—Roger DeCoster and Gerrit Wolsink—
dominated the Unadilla round of the Trans-AMA Motocross Series. The two
stars went 1-2 in the 500cc class. The top-finishing American was Brad
Lackey in third place… Four-stroke motocross bikes took over Carlsbad
Raceway for what was a four-stroke-themed day of MX racing… We fea-
tured an interview with Rex Staten… Mark
Barnett won the 125cc class at the Can-Am
Amateur National MX in Baldwin, Texas.
30 Years Ago October 30, 1985
Suzuki's all-new GSX-R1100 was featured in all its glory on the cover of
Cycle News 30 years ago… We reported that Ron Lechien was fired from
the Honda factory MX team for having been arrested for possession of
marijuana at Tokyo International Airport… Fred Merkel capped off the AMA
Superbike Series with a win at Daytona… Jim Holley won the CMC Trans-
Cal Supercross at Ascot Park Raceway… Chris Carr was presented with
the AMA Rookie of the Year Award… Streamliner "Tenacious" set a new
single-engine speed record at 276.1 mph.

We went cruisin' 10 years ago on the new Star Roadliner and Victory Ve-
gas Jackpot, which were featured on the cover, as well as Valentino Rossi
who chalked up another MotoGP win, this time at the Australian Grand Prix…
Josh Hayes was the star at the fourth running of the Toyota 200 at Willow
Springs… Alan Cathcart tested the Aprilia Tuono 1000R… Juha Salminen
clinched the 2005 GNCC title at the Powerline Park round in Ohio… Kurt
Caselli won the WORCS round at Goldendale, Washington.

Chris Carr nabbed his 70
th
-career pro win at the Del Mar Half-Mile and also
nabbed another cover 20 years ago… Carl Fogerty and Aaron Slight traded
wins at the World Superbike round at Indonesia… Chris Taylor wrapped up the
Formula USA title in Braselton, Georgia… Dale Quarterley won both legs of
the North American Superbike Series at Loudon… Scott Summers took anoth-
er step closer to the National Hare Scrambles
title at the Sunday Creek HS in Millfield, Ohio.
