40 Years Ago September 23, 1975
Our cover story 40 years ago was a test on the latest KTM 250 motocrosser. We
had both the Penton and KTM versions… Corky Keener took over the points
lead in the GNC/Camel Pro Series after winning for the second time in less than
a week, his latest victory, a half-mile, coming in Toledo… The Huntington Beach
M.C. had to cancel its desert race in California at the last moment when environ-
mentalist extremist decided to get involved. At
the same time, the nearing Barstow-to-Vegas
race was struggling to get permits approved.
30 Years Ago September 25, 1985
We featured the new Kawasaki GPz1000RX on the cover to accompany
our test of the 160-mph rocketship… Bubba Shobert clinched the Grand
National Championship/Camel Pro Series at the San Jose Mile, even though
Ricky Graham won the race… We were on hand when Team USA won the
Motocross of Nations in Germany. The team was made up of David Bailey,
Jeff Ward and Ron Lechien… The CMC Trans-Cal Series was heating up in
California where George Holland, Willie Sur-
ratt and Willy Simons were the big winners.

Ivan Tedesco made the cover for wrapping up the 125cc National MX title
at the final round at Glen Helen; it was a dramatic day of racing that had its
share of controversy. Ricky Carmichael completed his third straight unde-
feated season in the 250cc class (he overalled every round but did not win
every moto like he had done before)… Lorenzo Lanzi scored his first World
Superbike victory in Germany… We tested the Honda CRF250R and its new
dual-exhaust system… We interviewed World Superbike points leader Troy
Corser.

Carl Fogerty was featured on the cover 20 years ago for sweeping the Assen
round of the World Superbike Series and capturing his second-straight title…
We also featured the Honda CR125R on the cover to accompany our test of
the small-bore two-stroke motocrosser… We interviewed Ricky Carmichael
right after having raced a minicycle for the last time; it was off to the big bikes
now for the soon-to-be 16 year old… Geoff Aaron wrapped up another AMA
Trials Championship in Oregon… We inter-
viewed new 125cc MX World Champion Ales-
sandro Puzar.
