BAJA ACRES COMES ALIVE
M
any of the country's top
amateur motocrossers
spend the Labor Day holiday at
the 14
th
annual AMA Baja Brawl
motocross in Millington, Michi-
gan, September 4-7.
One of the top riders of the
weekend was Monster Energy
Kawasaki-backed Austin For-
kner who came away with two
class championships, one in the
250 Pro Am division and one
in the Open Pro Sport division.
The rider from Missouri was
going for the hat trick but a bad
start in the 450 Pro Am pre-
vented that from happening. He
did, however, work his way up to
second in the final but couldn't
catch eventual class winner
Yamaha rider Marshal Weltin.
The rider from Michigan,
Weltin, had a very good week-
end overall, finishing second
to Forkner in the 250 Pro Am
and third overall in the Open
Pro Sport. Weltin was looking
good in the 450 A class early
on. He won the first moto but
dropped out of the second moto
while leading on the final lap.
Michigan's James Roberts (Hon)
went on to take the 450 A-class
Championship.
Other notable winners includ-
ed Matthew Leblanc (KTM) who
topped the 85cc (9-11) class,
and Lance Kobusch (Kaw)
who aced both the Supermini 1
(12-15) and Supermini 2 (12-16)
divisions. Wisconsin's Carter
Biese (Hus) was another double
champ; he won both the Mini
Sr. 1 (12-13) class and Mini Sr. 2
(12-15) classes.
And in the Women 12-Plus
class, Shelby Rolen took the over-
all victory on her Kawasaki. CN
