CN
III FRIENDLY FIRE
P108
BY STEVE BAUER
"O
n September 20, the
eyes of the moto-
cross world will be
focused on Glen Helen Raceway
in Southern California as the
epic battle for the 2015 MXGP
World Championship goes down
to the wire! Will America's Ryan
Villopoto complete his amazing
career and seal his legacy by
winning the World Champion-
ship? Or, will Antonio Cairoli
prevail for his ninth World Cham-
pionship? Will the German rider,
Max Nagl, hold on to his slim
points lead and bring Husqvarna
its first 500cc title since 1993?
With just a handful of points sep-
arating the top three, it should
be an epic day of racing!"
I'm pretty sure the fictitious
paragraph above was close to
what Glen Helen promoter, Bud
Feldkamp envisioned when he
signed on the dotted line to
promote yet another USGP. No
one could predict that Villopoto
would break his butt in the fourth
round, never to return again, or
that four of the top six riders in
last year's championship missed
half of the 2015 season, due to
injuries. Being a race promoter
is not for the faint of heart, that's
for sure.
As I recall, Bud took quite a
bath the last couple of times he
promoted the USGP in 2010 and
2011. Participation by U.S. riders
was weak in 2010 and the overall
attitude of the American facto-
ries was apathetic, at best. With
WELCOME GLEN HELEN USGP!
The last time Glen Helen Raceway
hosted a USGP was 2011. Racing
was great, attendance not so
much. Hopefully, a larger crowd will
support the race later this month.
