P104 40 Years Ago September 16, 1975 Jimmy Weinert was pictured on the cover for winning the 500cc MX National Championship. Five riders—Weinert, points leader Billy "Sugar Bear" Grossi, Steve Stackable, Kent Howerton and Pierre Karsmakers—all had a mathematical chance of winning the title at the final round near New Orleans, and it all came down to the final moto. It was Weinert's second consecutive MX title… We covered the Western Regional Can-Am MX Qualifier at Spillway Raceway in Santa Maria. Chip Howell won both motos in the premier Open division. 30 Years Ago September 18, 1985 We featured a photo of the water-cooled Honda CR500R on the cover 30 years ago to accompany our test of the big-bore motocrosser… We were there when Jay Springsteen captured his 40 th career Camel Pro Series win at the Syracuse Mile… The CMC Trans-Cal MX Series got underway in Gorman, California, where Erik Kehoe, Willie Surratt and Willy Simons came away with the big wins… Eddie Lawson put bookmark wins on the Road Race World Championship Series at Misano. He was quoted: "I won the first one and the last one. I just screwed up in between." 10 Years Ago September 14, 2005 It was a week of clinching titles 10 years ago. Ricky Carmichael clinched his sixth straight 250 outdoor MX Championship at Steel City; Broc Helper won the 125cc class in front of the home crowd… Mat Mladin earned his sixth National Road Race title at Braselton, Georgia; Tommy Hayden won his second straight Supersport title, and Aaron Yates won the Superstock title… Stefan Everts wrapped up his ninth World MX title in Lierop, Holland. Mike Lafferty grabbed his seventh National Enduro title in Ohio.
