ryan Smith saw his cham-
pionship hopes revived
as a result of a perfect
storm at the Don Tilley Memorial
Charlotte Half-Mile. After a long
battle with Kenny Coolbeth, Jr.
and then a surging Jared Mees,
Smith scored the victory on his
factory-backed Crosley Brands/
Howerton Motorsports Kawasaki
in the return of The Dirt Track at
Charlotte Motor Speedway. The
championship pictured changed
drastically on the last lap as
Mees' Las Vegas Harley-David-
son/Rogers Racing XR750 quit
running just as he sped past the
white flag. Mees rolled to a stop
in turn one, his body language
showing his frustration.
The result of the win by
Smith and DNF by Mees: a
renewed championship battle.
