Almost forgotten in this sud-
denly intense championship
chase, is the quiet, but strong
performances turned in by
Sammy Halbert. Halbert was on
the podium again in Charlotte
and he's only 12 points behind
a 29-point lead in the GNC1
Championship. He leaves North
Carolina with just a six-point lead
over Smith with the Springfield
Mile looming, a playground of
Smith's. In other words, things
just got very interesting.
Smith (42) and
Kenny Coolbeth,
Jr. (2) were the
only riders to
lead the national
at Charlotte.
