Brad Lackey was featured on the cover 40 years ago in sweat pants and
sneakers to accompany our story on how to get your body tuned up and in
shape for motocross racing… The 500cc Motocross National Championship
Series made its stop in Ravenna, Texas, where Billy Grossi came away with
the big win, setting the stage for a dramatic series final in Louisiana, where
six riders had a legit shot at the title… We
interviewed 23-year-old road racer Gary
Fisher.
30 Years Ago September 11, 1985
Ricky Graham and Fred Merkel shared the front page 30 years ago;
Graham for winning the Springfield Mile and Merkel for wrapping up the
AMA Superbike title at Brainerd… We covered the Loretta Lynn's Amateur
MX Finals and some of the champs included Damon Bradshaw, Hank
Moree, Lowell Thompson Jr., Jeff Matiasevich, Donny Schmit, Jeff
Stanton, Todd DeHoop and Tommy Watts… Dave Thorpe wrapped up
the 500cc MX World title in Switzerland.

Mat Mladin and Valentino Rossi made the cover for winning yet again, this
time at VIR for Mladin and the Czech Republic for Rossi… We reported that
after having been named to the U.S. MXoN Team, Mike Brown was kicked
off the squad in favor of Ivan Tedesco, whose results were better over the
second half of the outdoor Nationals… Jared Mees won the Sadalia Half
Mile… Ben Townley and Tyla Rattray won the MX2 and MX1 classes,
respectively, at the Grand Prix of England MX at the Isle of Wight.

Observed Trials World Championship, and we also tested the latest 250
SX motocrosser from KTM, as well as the newest YZ125 from Yamaha…
1-800-Collect/Honda teammates Jeremy McGrath and Steve Lamson
swept the 250 and 125cc National Motocross classes at Binghampton's
Broome-Tioga Sports Center… Miguel DuHamel won the AMA Superbike
final at Laguna Seca… Scott Parker won the
Hoosier Half Mile… We interviewed Lucky
