P104 40 Years Ago August 19, 1975 Peoria National TT winner Sonny Burres was looking ultra-sexy sprawled across the grass, and splashed across our cover, 40 years ago. He led all 25 laps of the aboard his Triumph, leading Dave Aldana and Mert Lawwill to the finish. We interviewed newly crowned 250cc National Motocross Champion Tony DiStefano. The 18-year-old rider was only in his second year of competition on the National Circuit. We also interviewed various other "heroes" of the time, including Dave Aldana, Brad Lackey and Jay Springstien. A young Danny "Magoo" Chandler rode a monoshock Yamaha to victory in the 125cc Expert class at a local motocross race in Carson City, Nevada. 30 Years Ago August 21, 1985 The United States Team Captain for the Speedway World Team Cup Cham- pionships, Bobby Schwartz, appeared on the cover. That year, the U.S. team finished second, behind Denmark. Ron Lechien wrapped up his first-ever National Championship at the ninth round of the 125cc National Championship Series in Millville, Minnesota. He won by sweeping both motos. After incessant rains fell all day, Freddie Spencer clinched the 250cc World Road Racing Championship by finishing a strong fourth in Silverstone, England. We checked out the new 1100cc Harley Davidson Sportster, and revealed a first look at Yamaha's new YZ125 and YZ80 motocrossers. 10 Years Ago August 17, 2005 Brands Hatch World Superbike winners Noriyuki Haga and Troy Corser split the cover with Doug Henry, who earned his first X Games gold at the "Olympics of Supermoto." We reported from Summer X Games where Henry beat out Jeremy McGrath and Chad Reed for top honors. Geoff Aaron wrapped up his ninth National Trials Championship. Buell jumped into the Adventure segment with an all- new Ulysses XB12X, which we tested for the first time. Tohru Ukawa and Ryuichi Kyonari led a Honda sweep at the Suzuka 8 Hour. Nico Izzi starred at the Ponca City GNC while Ryan Villopoto, in his last year in the amateur ranks, came away with three titles. 20 Years Ago August 16, 1995 The winners of the weekend all graced the cover 20 years ago. Chris Carr won the Peoria TT in Illinois, Jeremy McGrath won the Washougal Motocross National and Carl Fogarty was victorious at the Brands Hatch World Superbike round. Team USA for the Motocross "des" Nations was announced, starring Jeff Emig, Ryan Hughes and Steve Lamson. Unfortunately they could not top the dominant Belgian team. We threw a leg over the Scorpa Works 295 trials bike, and even enlisted the help of two-time 125cc Supercross Champion Damon Huffman to help us with the test. Tallon Volland took his first 250cc World Grand Prix victory at round 11 in Maracay, Venezuela. LOOKING BACK Subscribe to nearly 50 years of Cycle News Archive issues: www.CycleNews.com/Archives
