CN III VOICES L E T T E R S T O T H E E D I T O R "I can only hope that Elena is able to make her dream come true and make it to World Superbike." Elena Myers I just read the excellent article on Elena Myers. I finally met Elena this past weekend at the Indy MotoGP. I confess that I cried a little when I met her because I was one of the team owners, along with Letha Jef- fers, back in the early '90s that ran the full WERA Endurance Series with an all-female road race team. We had the best female racers join us like Kath- leen Coburn (fastest woman road racer) and Wendy Epstein (also raced AMA Superbike in the '70s). These were my he- roes, and having them race on my team was inspiring. We did our best to promote the sport and show everyone that girls can be successful road racers. To see Elena now living the dream we had back then is emotional for me. I had a chat with John Ulrich after meeting Elena and he told me he cried the first time she won a race for his team. Elena has such a competitive streak that she will be successful in the Moto America Series. I'm so proud and happy to see a woman be successful in this series. I can only hope that Elena is able to make her dream come true and make it to World Superbike. I might cry a few tears of joy when she gets there. Cathy White Niccolo Canepa I've seen lots of jerk moves in all forms of motorsports over the past 40 years, but the video of World Superbike rider Niccolo Canepa purposely taking out another rider on a track day by grabbing his front brake tops them all (Cycle News issue #32). Please keep us informed of what sort of punishment may be meted out in the coming weeks. Steve Casper Photo Finish Please take a close look at the finish-line picture on the lead page of your Moto America article (Cycle News issue #32) showing Cameron Beaubier and Roger Lee crossing the fin- ish line. The gap from the front of the bricks to the front tire contact patch is bigger for the Yamaha. But wait, look at the gap from the rear painted line to the rear tire contact patch. Again it is a greater for the Ya- maha. Who really won then? John Welch In Cycle News issue #32, the editor wisely included news that Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca was under attack (more or less) by the Monterey County Board of Supervisors who were seeking to change management from the local group known as SCRAMP (Sports Car Racing Associa- tion of Monterey Peninsula) to a for-profit company, known as the International Speedway group (ISC). SCRAMP has managed the facility since 1957 and, having attended just about every type of event there over the years, I can attest to their sound management of the facility. The only black eye be- ing the 2006 MotoGP, where 106-degree temperatures, un- cured asphalt, and a bad traffic- management plan conspired to ruin an otherwise great race. Clearly, if anyone reading this hopes to see MotoGP return to the west coast, handing man- agement of this amazing facility over to a NASCAR-focused man- agement group from the east coast isn't going to help make that happen any time soon. Laguna Seca, felt by many to be the second-best short course in the world next to Monte Carlo, needs to main- tain local management, and as stated in the Cycle News article, avoid the mishaps the US Superbike Championship suffered at the hands of a simi- lar group, DMG, in 2009. I hope anyone reading this will visit: www.mazdaraceway. com/announcement/keep- laguna-seca-local and voice their opinion. The link has the email addresses of the Board of Supervisors and elaborates on why this is so important to anyone that loves the Monterey Peninsula, Laguna Seca and the motoring events held there. Please email or write today. No to ISC and yes for SCRAMP. Paul McKendry Letters to the editor can be sent to voices@cyclenews.com.
