It was a busy weekend for the racers of the AMA Grand National Championship/
Camel Pro Series. The Terre Haute Half Mile and Santa Fe Short Track were held
just a few days apart, but that was just fine for Terre Haute winner Mike Kidd and
Santa Fe winner Hank Scott… Pierre Karsmakers gave Honda the overall win
at the Moto-Masters 500cc National Motocross in Mexico, New York. He edged
out second-place finisher Jimmy Weinert…
Lou Gerencer was the king of the mountain
at the White Rose M.C. National Hillclimb in
Pennsylvania.
30 Years Ago August 28, 1985
Freddie Spencer made front-page news for clinching the 500cc World Road
Racing Championship in Sweden. Spencer also won the 250cc title that
same year… Steve Morehead was the top man at the Hamburg Half Mile…
Kevin Schwantz won the Superbike National at Seattle, while Wayne Rainey
topped the F-2 division… Lowell Thomson was the big winner at the Ponca
City Grand National MX Championships. Other winners included Colin Ed-
wards (Cycle Stock 9-11), Damon Bradshaw (83cc Stock Intermediate 12+),
and Shaun Kalos (105cc 12+).

Andrew Short got cover glory for becoming the sixth different winner in the
AMA National Motocross Series in the 125cc class. The win came at Spring
Creek... We featured an interview with MotoGP newcomer Colin Edwards…
Kevin Strijbos captured his first MX1 GP win of his career at Loket, Czech
Republic… Justin Barcia (85cc Stock and Modified 12-13), Jason Law-
rence (125cc A Pro Sport), Ryan Villopoto (125cc A), Josh Hill (125 B
Stock), Ryan Dungey (125cc 12-15 Modified), and Austin Stroupe (125cc
12-15 Stock) were some of the big winners at Loretta Lynn's.

Miguel DuHamel was featured on the cover 20 years ago for winning the
East St. Louis National Road Race… We covered Rich King's first-ever Grand
National victory at the Denver Half Mile… We also had coverage of the Rapid
City Half Mile won by Scott Parker. It was his 65th-career GNC win… Some of
the big winners at Ponca City were Cory Bauder, Justin Buckelew, Charley
Bogard, Travis Pastrana, Ricky Carmichael and Josh Hansen… We inter-
viewed 250cc World Road Race Champion Max
