VOL. 52 ISSUE 33 AUGUST 18, 2015 P89
WSBK: OSCHERSLEBEN, GERMANY, 2002
"The other would have been
the second race at Oschersle-
ben in 2002. I was on pole
and got the holeshot. Bayliss
was third or fourth in race one,
lollygagging around a couple
guys. I was like, 'I got this
s**t.'
"Up to that point I think I had
won five races in a row, and I'd
won the first race. But then I
got to look at Troy's lap times
from race one and I'm like,
'motherf***er!' I figured if he
gets a good start, I might have
a little trouble. As the story
goes, he did get a good start.
After lap one he's right on my
ass and I'm like, 'man, I'm in
trouble. I'm on a five, six race
winning streak up to now. I
have to win every race in order
to win the championship.'
"I put my head down and
broke the lap record, broke the
lap record, broke the lap record,
broke the lap record, four laps
in a row. And I pulled a two-and-
-a-half, three-second gap and
kind of broke his spirit.
"If you would have asked
me the best laps I've ever
done in my entire life, those
would be it."
Troy Bayliss (1)
and Edwards put
everything on the
line in a race that
would go down in
WSBK lore.
