P132 CN III PRODUCT REVIEW SCORPION VX-R70 LIST PRICE: $269.95 WEBSITE: http://shop.scorpion- usa.com/c/off-road-helmets_dirt_ vx-r70_blur_red Standout Feature Pump-up cheek pads and great airflow. Rider Analysis Pretty gnarly looking lid, isn't it? I love the shape of the Scorpion, it's slightly edgy and differ- ent, a bit Euro-looking. Easily the best feature for me is the pump up cheek pads. This makes the helmet infinitely tunable; if you've got a bizarre shaped head like mine, you'll have trouble finding a lid that fits perfectly. I spent four days in over 100-degree heat in this thing and it took a bit longer than usual for it to feel nice and comfortable. Nevertheless, airflow at the top of the helmet is quite good, although I did find the plastic liner at the top of the chin bar would foul the goggles I was wearing. That meant airflow below my nose was a bit restricted and in the heat made for a very hot area of my head. Also the screw in the middle of the three visor connecting points is hard to get to if you run with the visor in the lowest position, so it can be hard to tighten if you have large fingers. Overall though, the Scorpion is a very good helmet for the price. It's very light (around 3.5 pounds) and after a few wears and a good amount of sweat, it will start to feel really good. Rennie Scaysbrook The Scorpion VX-R70 is the same lid used by Baja 1000 champion Colton Udall and features Scorpion's TCT lightweight composite fiberglass shell, dual density EPS liner and the company's AirFit Liner Infla- tion System. Basically it's like having your old Reebok pump basketball shoe technology made for your helmet. There's a removable, tool-less quick change vent at the front of the chin and the VX-R comes with three large vents at the top of the brow which help suck air through the EPS liner. Air is then vented by two extraction holes at the bottom rear of the shell with two venturi holes at the top rear. The helmet contains the KwikWick system to draw moisture away from the rider's head and works with the extraction system to keep you cool. The goggle port is on the large side to give better pe- ripheral vision and the visor is a shatter-proof design that doesn't need tools to secure it. As usual the helmet is fastened to your head with the trusty D-ring system.
