"Briar and I had two different lines going," said Bonsey. "He was staying real tight in turn one and two. I was going up high and squaring it off. I think I had something for him. I found some time on him and I was kind of making some moves. I was figuring out what I could do towards the end." Be- cause they were riding such different lines Bauman didn't even realize he was being challenged. "I was on him, trying to make a move, but the last six laps I went through my tear offs," added Bonsey. "His bike was spitting out oil and I went through my tear offs. I went to wipe my shield and it just smeared and then I couldn't really see what I was doing. After that it was just kind of survive and not get passed. I really never looked back, but even if I would have looked behind me I couldn't have seen anybody anyway." 7 SAMMY HALBERT 5TH Sammy Halbert was back on a Harley-Davidson for the night and got off to a strong start before slipping back into a battle with Bryan Smith over fifth place. "It was an all right race for me," said Halbert. "I got a decent start. I was up there in the mix, but didn't quite have the speed to run up there on the podium today. I kind of lost my rhythm a little bit battling with Brandon Robinson on that Triumph. He takes some different lines. I would get a run on him, but that thing is strong and pulled back down the straight- aways. I finally got clear of him and could kind of run my own race, but I had Bryan Smith trying to pass me. I had a good battle with Bryan for fifth place. It was good to The reigning champ now holds an 18-point advantage over championship rival Bryan Smith.
