P142 40 Years Ago July 29, 1975 Can-Am pilot Jimmy Ellis was pictured on the cover of Cycle News 40 years ago after topping Jimmy Weinert and the rest at the 4 th annual Oly Superbowl of Motocross inside the L.A. Coliseum. Ellis won the 250cc International class, while Gaylon Mosier won the 500cc National class… We traveled to Canada to cover the 125cc motocross grand prix, where CZ pilot Antonin Baborovsky took the win with Zundapp rider Gilbert De Roover taking second… We interviewed Norton-Triumph's vice president/ marketing Terry Tiernan… Gary Scott won the Sacramento Mile. 30 Years Ago July 31, 1985 Our 250cc motocross shootout was featured on the cover 30 years ago. We compared the four 250cc MXers from Japan, and the winner was Yamaha YZ250… We cover the Vetter Fuel Economy Run in Monterey, California. The "Spud" Steamliner took the win with an impressive 470 MPG… Shawn Moran put himself in contention for the World Speedway Championship after taking a big win in England… We dove inside KTM's 500 MX to see what made the machine tick… Dave Thorpe outdueled Andre Malherbe to win the 500cc MX GP at Farleigh Castle. 10 Years Ago July 27, 2005 Suzuki's Broc Hepler made front-page news after winning both 125cc MX motos at Unadilla. It was his very first outdoor overall victory; Hepler's teammate Ricky Carmichael topped the 250cc class… Troy Corser and Noriyuki Haga split wins at the Brno World Superbike. Haga's win was Yamaha's first in the 1000cc era… We interviewed U.S.GP winner Nicky Hayden… Steve Hengeveld and Johnny Campbell teamed up to win the Best in the Desert Nevada 1000… Jason Raines won the AMA National Hare Scrambles in Illinois. DuHamel also won the 600cc Supersport… Honda factory riders Jeremy McGrath and Steve Lamson were the big winners at the Troy, Ohio, National MX at Kenworthy's; McGrath topped the 250cc class and Lamson the 125cc class… Kevin Varnes scored his first career Grand National victory at Hagerstown… Trampas Parker won both motos at the German MXGP and took over the points lead.
