TUNING UP TO WIN
ISDE
STORY AND PHOTOGRAPHY
BY SHAN MOORE
T
he U.S. World Trophy,
Junior Trophy and
Women's ISDE teams
have made big strides over
the last three years in becom-
ing consistent members of
the elite Six Days teams with
Antti Kallonen taking over as
team manager of the U.S.
effort in 2012. Last year, Kal-
lonen held an ISDE training
camp for the riders for the
first time, and this year he
doubled down on it, noting
that it helped to familiarize the
new riders to the ISDE format
and got the veterans back in
the groove before heading
off to the actual event. The
hope is to go for the gold at
this year's event in Kosice,
Slovakia, September 7-12.
Recently, World Trophy
Team members Mike Brown,
Thad Duvall, Taylor Robert,
Kailub Russell, Ryan Sipes
and Gary Sutherlin; as well
as U.S. Junior Trophy Team
members Grant Baylor,
Steward Baylor, Justin Jones
and Layne Michael; plus
Women's Team member
Rachel Gutish, all took part
in a three-day ISDE Training
Camp hosted by KTM and
team manager Antti Kallonen.
The problem Americans
encounter when competing
in Six Days is that the race
has such a different format
and different set of rules from
any series we ride here in the
States. The Training camp
gives the riders a chance to
get used to these rules and
also to become accustomed
to riding on the "eco" tires,
