CN III VOICES L E T T E R S T O T H E E D I T O R "Nobody thought Marc should have won that race except Marc." Scrub This James Stewart was not born when the scrub was invented. It is time to set the record straight. In the early '80s, Jo Jo Keller was doing the scrub at Southwick, Massachusetts. At- tached is a photo by Paul Buck- ley taken before James was born. He used this technique to beat his New England rivals and to show the big boys at the Nationals how it was done. It is now time to give credit where credit is due. All hail Jo Jo "Machine Gun" Keller for his part in motocross history. James has perfected it. But he is a long way from inventing it. Just ask Paul Buckley. Don Wiech New London, CT Mr. Weich sent us a photo of Jo Jo Keller taken by Paul Buckley "scrubbing" a South- wick jump but, compared to a traditional scrub, with the front wheel pointed sky- ward instead of toward the ground…editor GP Legends Thank you Cycle News and Yamaha for the photo of GP leg- ends Kenny Roberts, Valentino Rossi, Giacomo Agostini and Phil Read! (Captured, issue 26.) Amazing riders, every one of them. The total number of World Championships won by them is a truly astounding—34! Yes, 34. Gary Smith, Via cyclenews.com Marquez Vs. Rossi I watched the commentary and comments from the team bosses, the riders involved, the veterans that were interviewed, and even Jorge Lorenzo. No- body thought Marc should have won that race [Assen MotoGP] except Marc. I watched the videos over and over. Particularly from the helicopter, but even from Marc's on board, it appears obvious to me that Marc had slid the front as he entered the final corner, then lost it again and hit Rossi rather forcefully. It appears as though the contact with Rossi is what allowed Mar- quez to recover and continue on to the line. Clearly, Marquez was crashing and it was fortu- nate he didn't skittle them both allowing Lorenzo the win and point lead. Incidentally, he also cut the final corner through the grass as he was quick to ac- cuse his rival of. I love close racing (and this is about as close as it gets), but this was right on the edge of sportsmanship. It's been a great season so far! Barry Westervelt Bakersfield, CA Barcia, Mud Or No Mud Although I am a New Yorker and a dedicated Barcia fan, as I watched the start, I was tempted to fast forward, as I didn't want to watch the inevi- table mid-race Dungey pass. I decided to wait. As the clock wound down, I said, 'well, this will be even more of a disap- pointment getting passed near the end after leading almost the whole moto.' In the late laps when Justin seemed to have an answer for everything Dungey did and it looked like Dungey was on the edge and making all the mistakes trying to catch our bearded homeboy, the excite- ment level rose, and when he held on to the end, seemingly feeling no pressure from the points leader, the words I read after Budds Creek—"Barcia would never have won if it had not been a mud race"—came to mind and all was well.
