SMITH'S PATH TO NUMBER ONE
Bryan Smith lost the 2014 AMA
Pro Grand National title because of
a cracked oil sight glass. This year
the focus has been to get back in
a position to win the championship
this season. At 32, Smith realizes
the window of opportunity for him to
win the coveted AMA Grand National
number-one plate is beginning to nar-
row. So far he's doing what he needs
to do by winning all the races on the
Miles. Smith thinks the key to him
winning this year is to keep winning
on the Miles, have strong finishes on
the Half-Miles and minimize the dam-
age when it comes to races on the
GNC1 Singles at the Peoria TT and
the season finale at the indoor short
track at the Orleans Hotel & Casino in
Las Vegas.
When Pomona was canceled and
replaced by the short track in Las
Vegas that definitely hurt Smith's
chances, as did the rain cancelation
at Hagerstown, where he'd won the
year before. But then he caught a
break when the Castle Rock TT was
canceled.
Right now he's just 10 points out
of the lead. A win at Indy would move
him even closer to the series lead.
"It's tight," Smith said of his op-
portunity to get to the series lead by
the end of the year. "You see what
happened to Brad [Baker] tonight and
that can happen to any one of us. It's
too early to tell, but the more I can
win it's definitely good for the points
race."
While never happy to see races
erased from the schedule, Smith
said if one was going to go he was
glad it was the TT at Castle Rock,
Washington.
"Me and Kenny [Coolbeth]
Johnny Lewis (10)
