40 Years Ago July 8, 1975
Gary Nixon was pictured on the cover of Cycle News 40 years ago… We
showed you the first Penton motocross bikes with the KTM name attached;
the new distributor would be KTM Imports, USA… Midland, Michigan, hosted
a round of the 125c National MX Championship, where Honda's Marty Smith
came away with the win over Jimmy Ellis and Mike Kessler… We paid a visit
to the "Jones Boys"—Don, Gary and DeWayne—to see what they were up to,
which was building their own motocross bike,
the soon-to-be Jones-Islo (later called Am-
mex) motocross bike.
30 Years Ago July 10, 1985
We had some fun on our Harley-Davidson 883 Sportster test bike at
Ascot Park that was featured on the cover 30 years ago… Mammoth Moto-
cross was the place to be where Ron Lechien, Rick Johnson and Johnny
O'Mara came away with the big wins… We covered Steve Morehead's
win at the Lima Half Mile… David Bailey won both motos at the Nissan
U.S. Grand Prix of Motocross and Carlsbad Raceway. Dave Thorpe and
Georges Jobe went 2-3 overall… Fritz Kadlec
won the Trask Mountain 2-Day ISDE Qualifier.

Colin Edwards, Nicky Hayden, John Hopkins and Kenny Roberts Jr.
were featured on the cover 10 years ago to accompany our preview of the up-
coming U.S. GP at Laguna Seca… We covered Valentino Rossi's win at the
Dutch GP… Jared Mees took the win at the Lima Half Mile… Ben Townley
was a double-moto winner in the MX1 class at the French MX GP… Regis
Laconi was also a double winner; his victory coming at the World Superbike
round at Misano.

ald Jacks who, along with his passenger, was killed riding his streetbike when
he struck a bicyclist… Michigan riders—Dan Butler, Scott Parker and Kevin
Atherton—swept the podium at the Lima Half Mile… Jeff Emig and Steve Lam-
son were the big winners at the 250 and 125cc
National MX at Southwick… We interviewed
motorcrosser Mike Brown… Honda introduced
its line of 1996 CR Motocrossers.
