P184 40 Years Ago June 24, 1975 Husqvarna rider Kent Howerton graced the cover aboard his factory Husky. Howerton had just won the Whitney, Texas round of the 250cc National Cham- pionship Series, although Tony DiStefano won the championship. Gary Stan- dridge and Jim Ellis were the big winners at the SCORE International 400 in Baja California, Mexico. The duo didn't physically win, but were declared the victors on adjusted time. The eighth annual Mammoth Motocross took place at Mammoth Mountain in the high sierras of California. Over 500 riders flocked to the race on one of the most scenic motocross tracks in the U.S. 30 Years Ago June 26, 1985 A tantalizing close-up of Yamaha's all-new air-cooled XJ700N Maxim cruiser ap- pears on the cover. Inside, we did a full test on the bike. Mike Baldwin led from start to finish at the 15 th round of the AMA Grand National Championship Road Rac- ing Series at Bryar. Team Yamaha's Broc Glover was the winner of the 500cc class at round six of the AMA National Motocross Series in Lakewood, Colorado. Glover beat out Billy Lies and took over the points lead with his victory. Dave Thorpe was the winner at the fifth round of the 500cc World Motocross Championship Series in Montevarchi, Italy. American Danny Chandler crashed out while running third in the first moto. 10 Years Ago June 22, 2005 Ricky Carmichael landed the cover a decade ago; the GOAT lost the first moto to Chad Reed but topped the second moto to take the overall at Southwick. We un- veiled the new 2006 Kawasaki and Yamaha lineups, which included the brand new aluminum-framed YZ four-strokes. Valentino Rossi handed Sete Gibernau a crush- ing defeat at the Catalunya Grand Prix, disappointing the Spanish crowd who hoped to see their countryman win. We test rode AMA National Hare and Hound Champion Russ Pearson's Montclair Yamaha YZ450F. Suzuki-mounted Jimmy Jarrett topped the infamous Moose Run OMA ahead of Shane Watts and Brian Garrahan. LOOKING BACK 20 Years Ago June 21, 1995 Jeff Emig won a strange Supercross Season finale in Las Vegas, Nevada. After the lights unexpectedly shut off halfway into the program, the races got back underway with shortened main events. The Kawasaki "B" team of Dave Ondas, Paul Krause and Craig Smith took a bittersweet victory at the Baja 500 after the "A" team suffered the tragic loss of Danny Hamel. The factory racer was fatally struck by a civilian vehicle in the early miles of the race. We test rode the new Husaberg FC501 motocross bike at the picturesque Washougal Motocross Park in Washougal, Washington. We liked the bike, but had some gripes about the front suspension.
