2016 APRILIA TUONO 1100 RR FIRST RIDE P96 BY ALAN CATHCART PHOTOGRAPHY BY KEL EDGE T here's no replacement for displace- ment! So in order to keep its hitherto supreme V4 Tuono Naked muscle bike one step or more ahead of the latest competition from Austria, Germany and Italy, rather than nominally updating it by adding a few more stickers and a couple of revised engine maps, Aprilia has taken the most straightforward route to delivering extra power and torque, and simply added cubes. It's taken the uprated 999.6cc 65° V4 motor found in the new RF/RR Super- bike duo, and further maxed out its already radically oversquare 78 x 52.3mm dimen- sions with a 3mm overbore to 1078cc, thus increasing power to 175bhp/129kW at 11,000 rpm, up from 170bhp before. But the biggest gain is in torque, with a massive 121Nm now available at 9000 rpm, compared to 115.5Nm on the previ- ous one-liter version. And even more to the point, there's already 20bhp more than be- fore at 8000 rpm, and a far flatter torque curve for greater lowdown grunt. APRILIA'S TUONO HAS GONE THE TRADITIONAL ROUTE TO MAKE THE TUONO FASTER. IT'S GIVEN IT MORE CUBES! GOOD OL' FASHIONED HORSEPOWER!
