40 Years Ago June 17, 1975
The glistening engine of the new Triumph Trident graced the cover of Cycle
News 40 years ago. We did a full test on the legendary bike. Our only major
complaint was the "hefty" price tag: $2895… Teenager Jay Springsteen
topped a Harley-Davidson sweep of the Louisville Grand National in Kentucky,
which made him the youngest rider to win a Dirt Track National… Yamaha's
Jimmy Weinert won the opening round of the AMA 500cc National Motocross
Series in Baldwin, Kansas. Gary Semics was the runner-up while Kent
Howerton rounded out the podium.
30 Years Ago June 19, 1985
Our test ride of the new 1985 Yamaha YZ250 was the cover story 30
years ago. We came away quite impressed with the two-stroke motocross
machine… Terry Cunningham edged out Dave Bertram for the win at round
eight of the National Enduro Series, and Bertram, in turn, took second by a
mere two points ahead of Jeff Fredette… Freddie Spencer became the first
racer in history to win both the 250cc and 500cc Grand Prix Road Racing
classes on consecutive weekends with his victory at round five of the World
Championship Road Racing Series in Austria.

Valentino Rossi graced the cover of Cycle News as the star of an Italian sweep
at the Mugello MotoGP. Rossi took the big win over Max Biaggi and Loris
Capirossi… Thierry van den Bosch and Doug Henry did battle in the AMA
Supermoto season opener in Elkhart Lake, Wisconsin, each taking a win… We
rode the 2006 KTM 950 Supermoto at the Italian world launch of the new LC8-
powered machine, and also spun a few test laps aboard the Superstock Graves
Yamaha YZF-R1 racer bikes of Aaron Gobert and Jamie Hacking.

Miguel Duhamel won a thrilling race at the fourth round of the AMA Superbike
Series at Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course, and landed on the cover as a result. He
came out on top after a fierce battle with his Smokin' Joes Racing teammate
Mike Hale… Jeremy McGrath won round 15 of the AMA Supercross Series in
San Jose, California. His 29
th
career win meant McGrath was barely halfway into
his record-setting legacy, but at the time he had
already become the winningest rider in Supercross
history.
