we were pushing the pace a
little extra in a few areas. There
were a couple close calls
obviously. If there wasn't, then
I wouldn't have been pushing
hard enough. It's just what it
was. But the guys did a good job
getting my bike done for me. I
felt comfortable on it. We even
made some adjustments for the
second moto that even helped
a little bit better. Between bike
setup and line choice, these
conditions have never been the
best for me, but I haven't been
bad at them. But I can improve
and for sure I can be better in
these conditions."
Dungey just seems to have a
knack for putting himself in the
right place at the right time, and
in Colorado, the Red Bull KTM

tain sections. Some sections of the
track actually dried out producing
dust, while other sections remained
wet and muddy, making for some
tricky conditions. "It started out re-
ally muddy this morning," said Blake
Baggett of the track. (Baggett won
the 250 class here last year.) "And it
got kind of a harder layer underneath
but as soon as you broke through
that hard layer it was like a soft pock-
et. So inside the rut, you got the rut
going and then as the rut wall kind
of hardened up it got bumps inside
the rut. So it was definitely one of
the gnarliest Thunder Valleys, I'd
say. You just had to kind of trail-ride
it there at the end and just keep it go-
ing straight. But you were in the rut
for a good 300 feet around that out-
side sweeper and you were in it. You
couldn't get out of it."
Eli Tomac came into the Lakewood
race having won the previous four
motos, which is obviously a great
way to start the series, but that hardly
guarantees a championship. In the
sports long history, five other riders
started off the season 4-0, including
James Stewart in 2012, Grant Langs-
ton in 2001, Jeremy McGrath (6-0) in
1996, George Holland in 1987 and
Bob Hannah in 1983, and none of
them went on to win the title. Ironical-
ly, Stewart's championship title hopes
came to an end in 2012 in the exact
same location as Tomac's crash. In
that fall, Stewart injured his wrist.
Monster Energy/Pro Circuit/Kawa-
saki's Chris Alldredge has been
have a bit of a hard time since get-
ting on the 250 podium at round one
at Hangtown. After finishing right
behind his teammate Joey Savatgy
Ken Roczen
(1) and Tomac
went at it for a
bit in the first
moto.
