IN THE WIND P32 CONNOR PENHALL MEMORIAL CUP T he inaugural Connor Penhall Memorial Cup kicked off the 2015 Speedway Motorcycle Racing season, Wednesday, May 25, at the Grand Arena in Industry, California. The packed event was hosted to honor Con- nor Penhall, son of AMA Motor- cycle Hall of Fame Speedway Racer and former CHiPs actor, Bruce Penhall, who was tragi- cally struck and killed by a drunk driver while working as part of a contract crew for Caltrans in 2012. Attendees came out to raise awareness of the dangers of drunk driving and the increas- ingly compromised safety of road construction workers. Notable attendees of the event included Greg Hancock, three-time and current Speed- way World Champion; CHiPs actors, Larry Wilcox and Robert Pine; A&E Storage Wars star, Barry Weiss; and legendary race announcer and AMA Motorcycle Hall of Fame inductee, Larry "Super- mouth" Huffman. The final race standings included champion Billy Janniro (1), followed by Broc Nicol (4), Billy Hamill (104) and Buck Blair (39), respectively. MOTORCYCLIST FATALITIES DECLINE AGAIN M otorcyclist fatalities appear to have dropped for the second straight year, according to preliminary 2014 data from the Governors Highway Safety Association. GHSA projects the final motorcyclist fatality total for 2014 will be 4,584—about 1.8 percent less than the 4,668 recorded in 2013. This will be the second straight year in which this number has decreased, and the third decrease since 1997. GHSA adjusts its numbers to account for underreporting. The report includes prelimi- nary data from each state and the District of Columbia for the first nine months of 2014. Compared to the first nine months of 2013, motorcyclist fatalities decreased in 27 states, increased in 19 states, and remained the same in four states plus the District of Columbia, according to the report authored by Allan Willams, former chief scientist at the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety.
