B
illy Hamill was on brilliant form, dominating
round one of the AMA Speedway National
Championship Series at Costa Mesa Speed-
way, Saturday, May 30. Hamill won all of his
races on the night except for a technical failure
and no points in his second ride, robbing him
of a chance for a perfect score in the Grand
Prix style event.
The event and series had a much-improved
and deeper line up than in 2014, when de-
fending champion Billy Janniro strolled to the
title, winning 27 of 28 heats in the process.
Janniro started with three straight wins on the
night, and it looked like business as usual. But
second-place finishes to veteran Bart Bast in
round four, Aaron Fox in round five led to a
showdown with Hamill in semi final number two.
Hamill took the win in the semi and the main
ending Janniro's National winning streak dating
back to 2013.
Aaron Fox, fresh from his 2014 season with
the Edinburgh Monarchs in Scotland, was
simply outstanding and challenged Janniro
and Hamill on equal footing. After two second-
places he reeled off four straight wins before
coming second behind Hamill in the final.
The young guns shined brightly. Team USA
Speedway World Cup reserve Broc Nicol
placed fourth, the nerves in the final perhaps
getting the better of him with a starting tape
infringement. Max Ruml, fellow Team USA
member, finished fifth with 12 impressive points, de-
spite suffering a starting tape exclusion in his fourth
outing. He placed third in a very tough semi final with
Hamill and Janniro.
