It was a last-lap thriller that very nearly saw a Triumph rider Bran- don Robinson pull off an unexpect- ed victory, but Smith found a way to once again put the bright green machine atop the podium. In the end the margin of vic- tory was an oh-so-slender .020 of a second between Smith and a surprisingly strong Robinson on the Latus Motors Triumph. It was a pack up front until the final couple of laps when small mistakes within the pack allowed Robinson and Smith to get a small gap. It was jet-setter Jared Mees who came home third on the Las Vegas Harley-Davidson XR750, 1.128-sec- MIKEY MARTIN'S HOME COOKING It was a very good week for Mikey Martin, who lives not far from Sac- ramento in Acampo, California. The Weirback Racing Kawasaki rider was featured in his hometown newspaper, Sacramento's biggest TV station came out to interview him at Cal Expo and then he broke through to score a heat race win, followed up by an impressive victory in the Dash for Cash, giving him a championship point and pole position for the national. "It was awesome," Martin said of winning the dash. "I wasn't really expecting it. I came around the last lap and Brad [Baker] didn't have as much power as me so I got him right at the line." Although he didn't leave with the coveted main win, Mikey Martin had a good night in front of the home crowd. It was a packed house for the 50 th running of the Sacramento Mile.
