big tracks that won him this race.
It was a last-lap thriller that very
nearly saw a Triumph rider Bran-
don Robinson pull off an unexpect-
ed victory, but Smith found a way
to once again put the bright green
machine atop the podium.
In the end the margin of vic-
tory was an oh-so-slender .020
of a second between Smith and
a surprisingly strong Robinson
on the Latus Motors Triumph. It
was a pack up front until the final
couple of laps when small mistakes
within the pack allowed Robinson
and Smith to get a small gap. It
was jet-setter Jared Mees who
came home third on the Las Vegas

MIKEY MARTIN'S
HOME COOKING
It was a very good week for Mikey Martin, who lives not far from Sac-
ramento in Acampo, California. The Weirback Racing Kawasaki rider was
featured in his hometown newspaper, Sacramento's biggest TV station
came out to interview him at Cal Expo and then he broke through to score
a heat race win, followed up by an impressive victory in the Dash for
Cash, giving him a championship point and pole position for the national.
"It was awesome," Martin said of winning the dash. "I wasn't really
expecting it. I came
around the last lap and
Brad [Baker] didn't
have as much power
as me so I got him
right at the line."
Although he didn't
leave with the coveted
main win, Mikey Martin
had a good night in
front of the home
crowd.
It was a packed
house for the 50
th
running of the
Sacramento Mile.
