series rolls into Sacramento this
coming Saturday.
After the red flag, what had
been an eight-rider freight train
became a four-rider battle for the
win with the leading quartet of
Smith, Mees, Baker and Halbert
gapping the rest of the 19-rider
field. It was veteran McCoy who
headed up the next group, fin-
ishing fifth (6.8 seconds back),
with Henry Wiles and Kenny
Coolbeth, Jr. close behind in
sixth and seventh. Mikey Martin,
Doug Lawrence and Kyle John-
son rounded out the top 10.
The end result in the series
standings—Springfield tightened
things up. Coolbeth still leads
after three of 16 rounds 53-46
over Mees, who gained ground
with his runner-up finish. Sammy
Halbert is a close third with 44
points. Smith moved from near
the bottom of the standings all
the way up to seventh with the
victory, but he still sits 25 points
behind Coolbeth at this point.
For Smith, Springfield played
out pretty much as he'd pictured it.
"I saw him [Mees] sitting on
my fender for the last few laps
and not really trying to go by
me," Smith said. "I figured he
was going to try to dive bomb
me going into three. I figured
he'd go around the outside, or
at least try to, and I was ready.
Luckily I saw him and let him go
and I caught a good draft com-
ing into that headwind and went
sailing by."
Mees didn't seem too disap-
pointed after the race. It was
clear he was satisfied that he did
everything he could do to win it.
